One year ago in October 2007,
immediately after the election of President Nicolas Sarkozy and at
the instigation of civil society leaders, a series of meetings
bringing together ministers, NGOS and syndicates were organised in
Paris in order to take the needed long term decisions about the
environment and sustainable development for France. What were the
concrete results of this unique democratic moment for the country?
Could this type of forum be the answer for truly starting sustainable
development economies?

Wed Oct 15th at 6 pm (18:00): Wangari Maathai
In her native Kenya, Wangari Maathai has been
arrested, beaten unconscious and even called a subversive. In 2004,
her life changed when she became the first environmental campaigner ?
and the first African woman ? to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Let's discuss this sometimes controversial woman who has been planting
more than 10s of millions of trees,her movement called "Green Belt",
and the central role of women in conservation movements.

Have we started a new geological Age? The Earth has left the Holocene and has entered the ANTHROPOCENE. The Anthropocene is a neologism coined by Nobel Prize Winner (Chemistry) Paul Crutzen in 1995 when describing the increasing impact humanity has on the biosphere through human population and economic developement. Is it too late to reverse these effects? What could be done?

At autumn 2005 we discussed on economy and read several chapters of Jeffrey Sachs' book THE END OF POVERTY - How we can make it happen in our lifetime. Also, we read the web page Ten Things Debaters Should Know About Economics by Glen Whitman.
In the autumn 2004 our theme was "Environmental Success Stories", or "Positive Progress in Environmental Issues". Our aim was to see the bright side of things and study those cases which have been succesful - with a critical mind, of course.
